Surviving the Berkshire Winter Conte Elementary 2nd grade students explored their school’s biome, mapping evidence of survival strategies that animals use to survive the winter. They worked together to become experts on physical and behavioral adaptations, identifying traits in native animals. They used their research to write original scripts, make puppets, and put on a survival show for their peers and younger students. They created an original field guide of the local biome to capture which plants are thriving and which are threatened by recent flooding.They created a topographical model to better understand the landscape and worked with engineers from Reynolds Engineering and the Regenerative Design Group to come up with solutions to mitigate the flooding. They made a video to share their lived experience with flooding and how it effects the citizens of Clarksburg. Assisted by Melanie Willins and Elizabeth Orenstein, students ran experiments in their lab, built working oscilloscopes to make visible the human voice, and ran a hands-on Science Museum for their schools’ 1st and 2nd grade students. Inspired by biomimicry, students worked collaboratively to design wind turbine blades that would transfer wind energy into electrical energy. This multi-week residency culminated in a retelling of a folk tale, Abiyoyo, using shadow puppets, song, and live banjo. Girls Science Clubs meet once a week after school from 3:00 to 5:30 pm in Great Barrington, Lee, Sheffield, and Pittsfield. Young women mentors work with women STEM specialists. They will participate in experiments and activities while helping to lead labs and facilitate communication between the younger club participants (grades 3-6) and women STEM Professionals. Liliana serves as the Grant and Program Administrator at Mill Town Foundation, where she supports grantmaking related to the foundation's activities, programmatic operations, and daily administrative functions. Prior to this role, she served as the Workforce Training Orientation and Youth Programming Manager at Berkshire Community College (BCC). I make art from recycled materials, focusing on designing utilitarian items. As a hand paper-maker, I create paper by beating fibers in water until a pulp is formed. Then I create sheets of paper from the pulps of cotton T-shirts, blue jeans, bed sheets, junk mail, iris leaves, corn husks, and other waste materials. When the fibers dry, they form a hydrophilic bond -- It's where science meets art and this has always fascinated me. I made paper with Susie Hardcastle at Flying Cloud one summer, and she is one of the teacher-mentors who has inspired me to make art my life path and to focus on craft with "the mark of the hand." I am blessed to have so many helpful and creative people who have influenced me and helped me to believe that I could make a life as an artist, many of whom I met through Flying Cloud.
