Help create a culture of excellence

Young Women in Science creates a culture of excellence by inviting groundbreaking professionals to share their expertise and life lessons with youth. These women encourage both the mentors and girls to strive to be their best self. Each program element reinforces that message and strengthens identity; builds intellectual and social skills; and engages mentors in service to others. Written into YWiS’ DNA is a thirst for learning. Mentors encounter these qualities is all the STEM women, they encourage it in the girls, and in the process, strengthen these qualities in themselves.

What will be expected of me as a mentor?

Girls Science Clubs meet once a week after school from 3:00 to 5:30 pm in Great Barrington, Lee, Sheffield, and Pittsfield. Young women mentors work with women STEM specialists. They will participate in experiments and activities while helping to lead labs and facilitate communication between the younger club participants (grades 3-6) and women STEM Professionals. Mentors are expected to treat their position as a work obligation: be punctual, maintain prompt communication with the mentor coordinator, and follow the teaching philosophy of the Flying Cloud Institute.

What will I gain from this experience?

Throughout the academic year, we offer free trainings for young women mentors committed to individual growth and community stewardship. It is mandatory that mentors attend at least two training sessions. These trainings aim to build necessary skills for mentorship and help to build overall content knowledge on subjects ranging from career and academic preparedness to issues surrounding social justice. Additionally, trainings build leadership, group management, and goal-setting skills.
